Newcastle Christmas Markets 2024 to Shine with Pilot Coach Scheme to Boost Tourism and Accessibility

Newcastle is gearing up for an exciting festive season with the launch of a pilot scheme designed to boost coach tourism to the Newcastle Christmas Markets. The scheme, which has been organised and funded by NE1, in partnership with Newcastle City Council, the Confederation of Passenger Transport, and Destination North East England, aims to enhance the accessibility of the city’s Christmas attractions, making it easier for coach operators to bring visitors to the heart of Newcastle.

This pilot initiative seeks to position Newcastle as a must-visit destination for coach tours during Christmas and throughout the year by providing dedicated facilities for coach operators. The scheme will run over two pre-Christmas weekends, on November 15-16 and December 6-7, 2024, with the aim of testing demand and creating the necessary infrastructure to support growing coach tourism in the future.

The Tourism Partnership, including NE1, Newcastle City Council, and Destination North East England, has joined forces to bring this pilot scheme to life. These partners have worked together to create a streamlined experience for coach operators and passengers alike. Key players in the project include the Confederation of Passenger Transport, which supports the initiative with logistics and outreach to coach operators across the UK.

The pilot scheme is set to take place in Newcastle city centre, particularly around the bustling Christmas Markets. Key city centre areas will be designated for centralised drop-off points and long-term parking bays to make the experience smoother for coach operators. These designated areas will ensure that coaches can easily access the main attractions, including the Christmas Markets, the Christmas Village, and other iconic sites such as Grainger Market and Eldon Square Shopping Centre.

The initiative is expected to support local businesses by increasing foot traffic to the city centre, which will directly benefit shops, restaurants, and other service providers throughout the city. Moreover, it will give tour planners and coach operators the infrastructure they need to consider Newcastle as a key destination on their festive tours.
