This summer was particularly significant as Chicago hosted the Democratic National Convention (DNC) along with several other major conventions, leading to a surge in group hotel demand. The city recorded 1.1 million room nights booked for group events, surpassing pre-pandemic levels from 2019 and showcasing the city's strong appeal as a conference destination.
Leisure travel also thrived during the summer months. Major events like Lollapalooza, one of the largest music festivals in the country, and the NASCAR Chicago Street Race contributed to a robust total of 2.3 million leisure room nights, representing a 4% increase over 2023. This influx of visitors was fueled by a diverse range of attractions, entertainment options, and cultural events that made Chicago a top summer destination.
The strong performance during the summer season resulted in record-breaking hotel revenue, totaling $942 million, along with city tax revenue reaching $53 million. Both figures reflect a significant 13% growth year-over-year, highlighting the economic impact of the tourism sector on the local economy.
Additionally, Chicago welcomed over 671,000 international visitors during the summer, further emphasizing its global appeal and status as a key travel hub.
Looking ahead, Chicago is preparing for a bustling end to 2024, with major events on the horizon, including the launch of the Theatre Season, the beloved Christkindlmarket, and the Wintrust Magnificent Mile Lights Festival, which draws thousands of visitors to experience the holiday season in the city.
