Boom in Indian Travel to Europe: Schengen Visa Applications Up 43%, Rejections Surge

New Delhi, September 27, 2024 — European vacations are becoming increasingly popular among Indian travelers, with a significant 43% rise in Schengen visa applications in 2023 compared to the previous year, according to a report from the European Commission. However, despite the growing demand, Indians were among the top five nationalities with the highest rate of visa rejections last year, with a total of 1.6 million Schengen visa applications denied. These rejections generated over $130 million in fees, according to SchengenNews.

Boom in Indian Travel to Europe: Schengen Visa Applications Up 43%, Rejections Surge

The surge in visa applications highlights the increasing interest among Indian nationals to explore European destinations, but visa rejections have left many frustrated. One of the most common reasons for visa refusal is incomplete or incorrect applications. Experts advise applicants to carefully fill out every section of the form, paying special attention to mandatory fields marked with an asterisk (*), and ensuring all supporting documents are in order.

Incomplete applications or missing information can lead to delays, or worse, outright rejection. Immigration officials may request additional documentation, but this can slow down the process. As a result, authorities recommend that applicants take their time, review their forms thoroughly, and avoid last-minute submissions.

Visa Rejections Due to Lack of Travel Insurance

Another key reason for visa rejections is the failure to provide valid travel medical insurance, which is a requirement for Schengen visas. Applicants must show proof of insurance with a minimum coverage of $30,000 that is valid across all Schengen member states. Seafarers and diplomatic passport holders are exempt from this requirement.

Financial Proof and Travel Plans Essential for Approval

Applicants are also required to demonstrate sufficient financial means to support their stay in the Schengen Area. The amount varies by country, with Germany, for example, requiring travelers to show at least $45 per day. Failure to provide this proof will result in a rejection of the visa application. Additionally, applicants must clearly state the purpose of their visit and provide relevant supporting documents, such as an itinerary, letter of invitation, or program acceptance. Vague explanations or inconsistencies between the stated purpose of travel and the supporting documents often lead to rejections.

Other Factors Influencing Visa Rejections

Other common reasons for rejection include past criminal records, poor travel history, or previous visa violations. Overstaying in the Schengen Area or breaching visa terms, such as working on a tourist visa, can significantly impact future visa applications. Applicants with a questionable travel record are advised to provide transparent explanations and supporting documents to strengthen their case.

Tourism Growth Despite Challenges

Despite these challenges, Europe remains a popular destination for Indian travelers, with the tourism sector witnessing strong growth. Visa experts recommend that applicants carefully prepare their documentation, ensuring their travel plans are consistent, detailed, and well-supported by verifiable accommodation and financial information.

As the demand for Schengen visas continues to rise, understanding the reasons for rejection and taking preventive measures can help travelers avoid disappointment and ensure a smooth visa approval process.
