US Congress agrees to funding deal to avert shutdown in blow to Trump

US congressional leaders have agreed to a short-term funding deal in a move that averts a damaging pre-election government shutdown and also amounts to a snub for Donald Trump.

Writing to congressional colleagues, Johnson made it clear he was bowing to the inevitable.

Johnson held talks with Trump, even visiting his club in Mar-a-Lago in Florida, over how to resolve the impasse.

The website Punchbowl argued that Johnson and Trump had been guilty of a political misjudgment in pushing the Save Act, suggesting that the speaker had weakened his position in the process.
