Efford announced Tuesday that he is medically retiring from football but will remain a visible presence within the program, retaining his role as a team captain while taking on player-coach responsibilities for the rest of the season.
"Over the past few years, my body has taken more damage than I can continue to ignore," Efford said in a statement. "Damage that will continue to remind me of the sport that I love many years down the road. And while my heart and mind still have so much more to give, I've reached a point where I have to start thinking about the life I have ahead of me."
Efford acknowledged that retirement was not the ending he envisioned but said he walks away without regrets.
"This isn't how I imagined my football career coming to an end, but I am at peace. I can say with complete confidence that I gave this game every single piece of me. There is nothing left in the tank, and there are no regrets in my heart."
Efford leaves the football field with several honors. He was a two-time team captain, earning the distinction in 2024 and 2026. He was also a two-time All-ACC selection, receiving third-team honors in 2024 and honorable mention recognition in 2025. Away from the gridiron, Efford excelled in the classroom, being selected to the All-ACC Academic Team.
He graduated from Georgia Tech in December 2025.
The Yellow Jackets won 30 games and advanced to three consecutive bowl games during Efford's tenure.
